Retail Mobile Sites Still Win Over Retail Apps STUDY

Duri News -  Big online retailers are still reaching far more users with their mobile websites than their mobile apps, Nielsen’s latest report shows.

The report was conducted on 5,000 U.S. smartphone users who participated in the research.

It shows that the combined reach for five big online retailers – Amazon, eBay, Target, Best Buy and Walmart – was around 50% of users for their mobile website, and around 25% of users for their mobile app in the period from October 2011 till January 2012. The combined reach averaged 52% to 59%.

Strike looms at Canada's largest airline Air Canada

Duri News - As early as next Monday over 8,000 unionized workers representing mechanics, cargo agents, and baggage handlers could go on strike. The Federal Government says that a strike would not be in the best interests of Canadians.

The federal Labour Minister Lisa Platt said:"The government is concerned that a strike is possible and is taking this situation very seriously,"? In 2003 and 2004 the union gave many concessions to save Air Canada from bankruptcy. It is now trying to recoup some of the union losses.

However, Air Canada is again suffering losses while its main competitor Westjet is doing better. Air Canada has lost 249 million for the year. The Conservative government legislated postal workers back to work last summer. Some speculate that the government could also force Air Canada workers back to work so that travel is not disrupted during the March break. Brazil: Economic growth slowed to 2.7 per cent last year

Duri News - Although 2.7 per cent growth might look quite acceptable to many European countries among the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) it is on the low end of the scale.

The poor performance arises from higher borrowing costs and a currency that is very high compared to many others. The high rial leads to exports being more expensive.

Many analysts think that the central bank will lower interest rates to stimulate borrowing. Finance Minister Guido Mantega predicts growth will increase to 4.5 per cent this year. However analyst John Welch said:"Brazil is losing international competitiveness," "They're blaming all the problems on the exchange rate, but have ignored structural reforms."

In 2010 Brazil grew by 7.5 per cent but this last year Brazilian growth trailed that of India and China. Growth this in Brazil fell short of the 4.6 average growth for South America predicted by the IMF.

The central bank increased lending rates last July to curb inflation but afterward economic expansion slowed. Now it is expected that rates will again be lowered even though inflation at 4.3 per cent remains relatively high. For much more see the full Bloomberg article.

Yahoo restructuring to involve job losses

Duri News - Scott Thompson the new CEO of Yahoo is planning a major restructuring of the company. According to the technical blog All Things Digital there could be thousands of employees laid off.

Thompson a former PayPal executive could announce changes as soon as the end of March. The company has hired Boston Consulting group to help guide it through restructuring.

Yahoo released a statements that said in part:"As we have indicated, our leadership is engaged in a process that will generate significant strategic change at Yahoo, but final decisions have not yet been made at this point.

Beyond that, we will not comment," Last year Yahoo's revenue dropped by more than one fifth.

The company decided to fire former CEO Carol Bartz in September and since then have done a strategic review to try to decide how things can be turned around.

Givenchy goes gothic glam for Fall 2012

If you want to be a little more covered up, since it is fall and winter after all, Givenchy offers slightly witchy looking ensembles with capes, black gloves, broad belts and boots, like the gold star embellished cape ensemble paired with an antique gold colored top. Where is the cat?

A similar outfit with a pleated red skirt and slip top is offered, accessorized with red gloves, a thick black belt and knee-high riding boots.

Breaking away from all that black (and orange – together!) is a mossy bronze outfit with olive drab satin pants, topped with a mossy olive and navy blue slip top, accessorized with a silken olive scarf, full-length bronze gloves and those sexy boots, this time over the knee! And don’t forget the deep, dark lipstick – how about a really luscious plum if black won’t do it?

The Chinese military budget flames

Duri News - Military spending in China will grow 11.2% this year, announced, Sunday, March 4, Li Zhaoxing, former Foreign Minister became the spokesman of the NPC. The envelope, which had increased by 12.7% in 2011 will reach 670.2 billion yuan (80.5 billion euros).

This double-digit increase, exceeding the growth of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of China (+9.2% in 2011), confirms that Beijing is working extra hard to catch up on Washington and Moscow military. The further increase tensions could rise in the western Pacific, where Beijing says its growing ambitions, especially around disputed islands including Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines.

"China is determined to stay on the voice of peaceful development and pursues a policy of military national defense," said Li Zhaoxing, speaking to the press before the opening of the annual session of National People's Congress, during which the budget is approved. "China has 1.3 billion people, we have a large territory and long coastline, but our military spending is relatively low compared to other countries," he said.

The amount of official military budget of China is, according to experts, an underestimation of military spending actually performed. "The actual budget is about double," says Willy Lam for example (Chinese University, Hong Kong). The increase of the official budget was 12.7% in 2011 and 7.5% in 2010, but it exceeded 10% in most of the last twenty years.

CONCERN IN WASHINGTON

The Pentagon is paying more and more importance to the Asia Pacific region where he is concerned about the rise of the People's Liberation Army, the largest in the world and whose programs remain surrounded in in secrecy. In November, U.S. President Barack Obama announced that his country would strengthen its military presence in Australia, a decision in which Beijing saw the sign of a "Cold War mentality". Target bans sandblasting to make distressed jeans

Duri News - Retail chain Target is among the latest in the slew of clothing companies who are stopping the practice of sandblasting their clothing for the sake of fashion due to the health risks associated with the process.

Sandblasting is the process used to create that slightly distressed, “worn-out” look desired by many a fashionista since the 1980’s, created by firing silica at high pressure onto the denim.

However, the super fine particles of silica dust can result in a fatal pulmonary disease called silicosis, an incurable form of lung cancer, if inhaled.

Target follows the example set by Levi's and H&M who stopped selling their distressed denim collections back in 2010, in a response to pressure from organizations such as the Sustainable Apparel Coalition.

The Sustainable Apparel Coalition was formed at the beginning of 2011 with labels, in alphabetical order, Adidas, Esprit, Gap, H&M, Levi Strauss, Nike, Nordstrom, Patagonia, PUMA, Timberland, and Walmart joining their cause for socially responsible apparel manufacture.

In Australia, groups like Oxfam are getting local jeans manufacturers such as Just Jeans to stop sandblasting their denim line with continued success.

In the summer of 2011, Versace also stopped sandblasting when pressured by the Clean Clothes Campaign and Change.org and was reportedly even forced to shut down its Facebook wall for a short time.

Fashion label Armani also went on the release a statement that they have ceased to use the process of sandblasting starting with their Autumn/Winter 2011/2012 collection, which they posted on both Facebook and Twitter.

Does this mean the death of the distressed look in denim? Absolutely not, since there are other ways by which the look can be achieved, such as scraping the denim fibers using safer tools and methods.

SnappSchool Connects Parents With Classrooms

Duri News - A startup called SnappSchool is compiling a weekly rundown of the Kindergarten to 6th-grade math curriculum — for parents.

The idea is that if parents understand more about what and how their children are learning, they can better support their children’s education.

Each digest contains a “quick refresher” about the topic, links to further resources and exercises, and a link to a news story or other information that connects the topic to the real world.

SnappSchool hires certified teachers to write the digests, and they’re based on Common Core Standards that all but five states use. Because the emails are not coordinated by your children’s specific teachers, however, they might be paced slightly ahead or behind their actual classroom lessons.

Kanye West shoes retail for $6000!

Duri News - Atlanta born rapper turned fashion designer, Kanye West who debuted his new clothing line DW only last October during Paris Fashion Week, also managed to create a shoe collection with Italian shoe designer Guiseppe Zanotti.

That shoe collaboration was also featured during the DW collection launch, including the now famous $6000 pair.

Priced at around 4,420 Euros or roughly $6000, the tri-color open toe bootie sandals feature a cream pearl encrusted design with three beaded cuffs at the ankle, beige suede straps in the front and black straps in the back along with what look like black 5 inch stiletto heals.

The shoes have also been featured in Harper’s Bazaar Australia and are now world famous, actually quite the conversation piece among fashionistas…

Apparently, the beaded open toe booties were playfully dubbed “sexy baby booties” because to some they resembled crocheted baby booties. To yours truly, they look like something African tribal beaded necklaces, usually quite colorful but everyone has his/her own opinion…
If you’re interested in their unique and rather sexy design, the Kanye West beaded bootie sandals are available through French boutique Colette for roughly around $5,900 and because they’re so controversial may be limited edition, depending on how well they’re received.

Think of ornately plush regency and rococo décor at French palaces, featuring pastels such as mint green, peach, powder blue and pale pink, with gold tracings. Now translate that into a fashion collection if you can…

Featured were structural separates with French regency motif, tapestry and beading, often paired with leather or fitted black pants to contemporize. This collection offers a very polished, sophisticated look expected from French couture.

Pretty pinks and florals for Nina Ricci Fall 2012

Models took to the runway at the Espace Ephemere Tuileries donning styles by Nina Rici reminiscent of 1950’s chic, in a color palette of dusty pinks, mauve, lavender, plums and burgundy as well as a heavy helping of basic black.

Pretty florals took their place among plaid patchwork, fur elements, plenty of sheer chiffon and even polka dots, trimmed with marabou! A retro feel was also achieved with deep red lipstick which is very much in this year.

Criss-crossed pumps in mauve, deep red, black and lavender accessorized matching ensembles, as did Victorian granny boots in pearl grey, which were teamed with a sheer pale pink skirt.

One of the sweetest ensembles in this romantic collection is a petal pink faux fur coat, which has been belted with a striped pink belt, lavender pumps and a mauve handbag. As different as the elements are, the look is very pulled together!
