How Brands Are Using Promotions to Market on Pinterest

Written By Duri News on Thursday, March 08, 2012 | 10:53 AM

Duri News - Pinterest’s traffic and engagement are spiking, and marketers want a piece of the action.

After launching branded profiles, many businesses are now developing promotions on the platform, encouraging users to follow the profiles of individual brands and pin items from their websites.

Most recently, British Midland International (bmi) launched a “Pinterest Lottery.” The airline has posted a series of boards on its Pinterest page, featuring numbered and logo-clad photos from five destinations: Beirut, Dublin, Marrakech, Moscow and Nice. Users are asked to repin up to six images. At the end of each week, the company will choose a number at random; the users who had repinned the image with that number will be qualified for a chance to win a pair of free return flights to any bmi destination.

In December, Lands’ End Canvas launched a promotion called “Lands’ End Canvas Pin It to Win It.” Fans of the apparel brand were asked to pin items from landsendcanvas.com to designated Lands’ End Canvas pinboards for a chance to win one of those items.

Zuckerberg Likes App That Turns Facebook Into Pinterest

Written By Duri News on Wednesday, March 07, 2012 | 9:58 AM

Duri News - An app that takes the photos from your Facebook News Feed and puts them in a layout strikingly similar to Pinterest got the seal of approval from Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday.

The Facebook CEO pushed the “Like” button on the Friendsheet Facebook app, which launched in January but is now likely to gain plenty of traction from Zuckerberg’s thumbs-up. Nearly 12 million Facebook accounts subscribe to his Facebook Timeline.

The app displays public Facebook photos in small panels, just like popular social bookmarking site Pinterest showcases images on Pinboards. Although Friendsheet resembles Pinterest at first glance, the mastermind behind the app said it was also inspired by Facebook Timeline.

“The goal was to take Facebook photos, and turn it into a visual experience while maintaining speed, performance, and a great, intuitive experience,” Friendsheet creator Zachary Allia wrote on Facebook.

Friendsheet settings allow you to hide photo captions and comments for a more visual experience.

This isn’t the first site to imitate Pinterest’s success or layout. Pop mega star Lady Gaga’s new social network, Little Monsters, latches onto design elements of Pinterest.

Friendsheet is also available as a Google Chrome app.

Is Social Media Actually Making Us Less Connected

Written By Duri News on Friday, March 02, 2012 | 7:18 PM

Duri News - Checking email during meetings. Shopping on your smartphone in the middle of class. Texting at funerals. These are a few of the examples that MIT professor Sherry Turkle offered during her TEDTalk on Thursday, in which she argued that “technology is taking us places we don’t want to go.”

Turkle, a psychologist who leads MIT’s Initiative on Technology and Self, believes that while our constant communication and social media engagement does make us more connected, it’s coming at the sacrifice of real conversation.

And she thinks that will have some serious consequences for our relationships, our self-perceptions and our emotions.

One major issue, she said, is that when we text, email or post to a social networking site, we’re able to project ourselves as we want to be seen. “We get to edit, we get to delete, and that means we get to retouch.”

Inversely, Turkle notes that a face-to-face conversation “takes place in real time and you can’t control what you’re going to say.”

Further, with our phones at our constant disposal, Turkle says we’re only paying attention to the things we want to pay attention to. And that leaves us increasingly disconnected from our friends, family and co-workers as we simply turn to our devices when a conversation no longer interests us.

This creates a situation that Turkle said makes us, “expect more from technology and less from each other.” In the long run, she thinks technology is ultimately headed towards creating a Siri-like program that can offer “companionship without the demands of friendship.”

There’s certainly plenty of data that supports Turkle’s argument. Surveys showing that we’re increasingly texting and social networking during meal time or in the bedroom have become commonplace.

But what’s to be done about it? Turkle isn’t calling for a return to the dark ages of pre-smartphone life. Rather, she says it’s time for us to have a more self-aware relationship with technology. And in turn, we should do things like create sacred places at home and at work where we leave the devices out.

Turkle’s remarks drew an emphatic standing ovation from the TED crowd. But we want to know what you think: Does technology threaten the quality of our relationships and personal development, or are such fears an overblown perception of a generation that didn’t grow up with digital? Let us know in the comments.

Zynga Launches Platform for Non-Facebook Gaming

Duri News - Zynga is trying to diversify beyond its signature Facebook games. Zynga.com will no longer be just its corporate website — it will also be a platform that features the company’s most popular games as well as titles by other publishers.

The site, which is set to go live in a few days, will feature Words with Friends, CastleVille, Zynga Poker, Hidden Chronicles and CityVille, the company announced on its blog Thursday. In addition, Zynga has partnered with MobScience, Row Sham Bow and Sava to develop games for the platform.

The site will also include Social Stream, a feature which lets you play in real time with your friends and find new ones.

Though it sounds like Zynga is trying to create its own social network, CEO Mark Pincus wrote in the blog entry that “we built Zynga.com to complement [Facebook's] pervasive social graph.”

Using Zynga.com, other publishers will be to “extend the reach of their games and connect to even more players,” Pincus wrote on the blog. “Later this year we’ll make our platform available for all social game developers through a Zynga API,” he added.

Though Zynga has an enviable relationship with Facebook and generates 12% of that company’s revenues, Pincus’ company is looking to diversify its sources of income. Currently, 93% of Zynga’s revenues come from Facebook.
