Why I orgasmed in an MRI scanner | Thump

Written By Duri News on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 | 9:57 AM

Duri News - Let me just get this out of the way upfront: I had an orgasm in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner.

That is, as background research for my book, “Dirty Minds: How our brains influence love, sex and relationships,” I participated in a study at Rutgers University where scientists measured the activity in my brain as I self-stimulated to an orgasm.

I wasn’t the first woman to participate in one of these studies – and I won’t be the last.

I know, it’s controversial and perhaps even a bit shocking. And, because of that, I expected readers and commenters to make a few jokes at my expense (and perhaps even question my character) when I wrote about the experience.

But what I didn’t expect was so much outrage about sex research in general.

Time and time again, regardless of the publication discussing my fMRI orgasm, commenters wrote things like, “If only researchers were as interested in finding a cure for cancer,” and “I can’t believe my tax dollars are going to pay for such useless research.”

How can the study of human sexuality be considered useless? This is something that is prevalent in each and every one of our lives. When we’re not having sex, we’re talking about it. When we’re not talking about it, we’re thinking about it. And when we’re not thinking about it, we worry that something is wrong with us.

Sex is a primary source of human motivation and can change the way we act and the way we feel in quite dramatic ways. And this isn’t something that occurs solely in the privacy of our bedrooms: You see sex at play in advertising and marketing, in problems in the work place, in self-esteem and identity, in pleasure and reward, and also in the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies.

Human sexuality has direct influence over so many aspects of day-to-day life. Understanding such a universal phenomenon is never useless. Yet, many want to discount its importance – and its study.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Alfred Kinsey, esteemed biologist and founder of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction, pioneered the study of sexual behavior with the publication of the Kinsey Reports. That work was the first of its kind: a systematic, scientific approach to understanding variation in normal sexual behavior. And, thankfully, his work has inspired countless brave scientists in the decades since to buck the status quo and study human sexuality.

Yet, while we’ve come a long way in our understanding the biology of sex, there is still plenty left to discover. We now have a good deal of data on the mechanics of sexual behavior.

But as anyone who has ever been involved in a sexual relationship knows, there’s a lot more to sex than pure mechanics – a heck of a lot more. The blossoming field of neuroscience, including neuro-imaging studies like the orgasm one I participated in as well as cellular and molecular research, is now offering us a new window of understanding into age-old questions about sex and related behaviors by focusing on all the ways our brains influence our behaviors.

During the course of my research for “Dirty Minds,” I asked neuroscientific researchers about the greatest challenges involved in studying human sexuality. I expected to hear concerns about finding study participants willing to be honest about their sex lives or if what was learned in the laboratory could really be applied to real-world behaviors.

But unanimously, the scientists I talked to said their greatest challenge was finding research grants and financial support for their work. Because so many of us are peevish about the study of sex, funding agencies can be, too. But none of us should be. Human sexuality is important – and its study is something we should all get behind. Because we can’t begin to have discussions about how to best deal with problems concerning sexual behavior, sexual function and sexual intimacy until we have a better handle on what’s normal.

Time and time again, I’m asked how I managed to have an orgasm in an fMRI scanner. But that’s not the right question. The important question is why I had an orgasm in an fMRI scanner. And that’s to help further our understanding of orgasm and human sexuality. When I say I came for the science – I mean it. And it’s my hope that more people will do the same in the future.

Google Privacy Snafu – Delete your Google Browsing History before it’s too late

Written By Duri News on Wednesday, March 07, 2012 | 5:16 PM

Duri News - By March 01, 2012 Google Inc.’s controversial new privacy policy will come into effect, which will permit the online giant to collect, save and use your personal information as they please, if you are one of its users.

This move is sure to send shudders down many users’ spines especially those who do not wish their privacy to be invaded in any which way. Naturally, many privacy campaigners have now come down heavily on this new policy and have raised an objection with the American regulators

There is however, one way to thwart the web colossus in its endeavor to set up a permanent profile of yours, which could include your personal details such as age, gender, region, locality etc. You can do so by erasing your browsing history. This will restrict the extent to which Google can record your every action, as also any of your uneasy secrets.

Here are three easy steps to do so:

1. First sign into your Google account and then go to the Google homepage. In the upper right side there is the dropdown menu. Under your name in the upper right-hand corner you can see ‘account settings’ – Click over it.

2. Next, you will find in Account’s overviews a section called ‘Services.’ Under this there are sections Go to link – ‘View, enable, or disable web history.’ Click over it.

3. You will get Web History. You can wipe out all your search details by clicking over ‘Remove Web History.’ Once you do so the entire history of your searches will stay disabled (paused) unless you choose to turn it on once again.

This Instagram-Printing Party Box Could Soon Be Yours

Duri News - A peculiar lunch-box sized device called Instaprint popped up at insider events from the Grammy Awards to South by Southwest last year — spitting out Instagram photos into the physical world. Now its creators are working on bringing the box to the masses.

“Holding a physical photo in your hand is something that’s been lost over the last years,” explains Michael Lipton, the co-founder of Breakfast, the four-person agency that created Instaprint. “Nobody probably wants a shoebox of 1,000 of these things, but if they’re at party and can walk away with one, then it’s a nice keepsake.”

Breakfast calls itself a “physical-digital interactive agency.” You may be familiar with some of its projects: It built the blimp for Conan O’brien that automatically checked into Foursquare venues as it floated over them and a tweeting bike for Livestrong. As a side project, Instaprint fit with Breakfast’s agenda perfectly.

The wall-hanging box prints Instagram photos from events as they’re posted. It finds photos using the event’s hashtag, includes likes and comments when it prints, and uploads the collection to a website for browsing later.

It has a similar effect to handing out disposable cameras at a wedding — everyone takes photos, but they get pooled in one place. Meanwhile, guests walk away with a physical artifact.

Sound like something you’d like to have at your next party? Probably not yet. Breakfast only made about a dozen prototypes, and they’re not exactly self-serve. Renting a device, complete with staff member to keep it running, starts at $5,000 — a lot of money to drop on a novelty photo printer if you’re not on a corporate marketing budget.

Breakfast hopes that, with some tinkering, it can bring the price tag on Instaprint down to about $399. But it needs $500,000 to turn its prototype into an DIY kit, a process that involves updating and redesigning 100 parts. It’s taking a stab at collecting funds — and gauging interest — on Kickstarter. So far, it’s raised about $40,000.

If the funding comes through, the company plans to be shipping Instaprints by late summer. Each device will be powered by a mini Linux computer, easy to set up through wireless internet and will be inkless (the color comes from the photo paper).

1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Sells for $4.62 million

Duri News - A tastefully restored aluminum-bodied 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing was auctioned by Gooding & Company, for a record $4.62 million.

The Gullwing is a very, very special car in its own right. But this one here is a true jewel, given its history and immaculate condition. The fact that this is one of the only 29 Alloy 300SLs makes it

This SL, chassis number 5500208, was sent to America on May 27, 1955, and had a pretty normal life with no recorded race history, until 1980 when it fell in the hands of Hans Dieter Blatzheim of Bonn, Germany. He bought the car for $57,000 which is truly fantastic for an unrestored car, especially at that time.

It was then restored for the first time and, for some unknown reason, was sent back to Germany and came back to America in 1982. It went through some other repair jobs and engine rebuild by a couple of other owners, until it was bought by the McBride family. They gave it the most thorough restoration work, which took until mid 2011.

Forget the iPad 3 - Apple is Launching the iPad HD

Written By Duri News on Tuesday, March 06, 2012 | 7:17 PM

Duri News - As an editor, I’m pretty much contractually obliged to be cautious. So many rumors are constantly swirling around the next hot Apple gadget that one has to keep an open mind about all of them — every last one could be wrong. The company could teach the NSA a thing or two about secrecy, so there’s never any official denial or confirmation.

But sometimes, just sometimes, you get a hot tip from a good source with an unblemished track record. It confirms something you’ve been feeling in your gut for days, and you start scribbling down all the reasons why it would make sense.

That’s what happened Monday, and that’s why I’m prepared to cast caution aside and call it: the device we’ll be watching Apple unveil on Wednesday is called the iPad HD, not the iPad 3.

The first clues on this trail came last week, when a Gizmodo tipster uncovered evidence that Griffin and Belkin — longtime Apple peripheral makers trusted by the company — had ‘iPad HD’ cases buried in acres of dry accessory listings like the ark of the covenant in a warehouse of boxes. The site added another, less appealing rumor from an app developer on a Romanian forum that claimed to see an iPad HD show up in the apparently un-spoofable usage stats for his app Tapatalk.

Then Monday we got a heads-up from our source that the iPad HD name was a go. We started hunting for a second source. Shortly thereafter, CNET and VentureBeat got the same word from their sources.

This matches the pattern of activity around the iPhone 4S launch — a couple of days beforehand, we saw a sudden flurry of rumors to the effect that everyone expecting an iPhone 5 had got the wrong name. Unfortunately, they were all but drowned in a sea of iPhone 5 rumors. This time, we’re paying closer attention to alternate names.

Samsung Galaxy S3 rumored to be launched in April

Duri News - Not even half way through and 2012 is already shaping up to be a big year for techies, as it will witness a smartphone battle royal with two of the biggest smartphone manufacturers, Apple and Samsung, head to head as they release latest versions of their best selling smartphones.

The highly-anticipated iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 will both be vying for rule of the roost, as their near back to back releases will see users scrambling for the most hi-tech smartphone to date. And while Apple, in its usual reticence, is keeping the release of the iPhone 5 a mystery, Samsung will be reportedly launching its Galaxy S3 some time in April, and the United Kingodm will be the first country to have the phones as part of a London Olympic game's tie-in.
News of the launch was first reported by ZDNet Korea, which then confirmed the launch details with Samsung’s global marketing agency, although previous statements from the Korean tech giant had only stated that the release of the Galaxy S3 would happen sometime in the first half of the year, as an official statement says, “The successor to the Galaxy S2 smartphone will be unveiled at a Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, close to commercial availability of the product.”
Samsung’s official Twitter account, @samsungtomorrow, also added that the April release was untrue.
Of course, the launch is going to be significant as the Galaxy S3 promises a smartphone experience like no other; one that could possibly even outdo the iPhone 5.
The Galaxy S3 boasts some particularly impressive features. Firstly, the phone will be offering quite a large touch screen, around 4.8 inches that will display in full 1080P resolution, quite a step up from the S2’s 4.3 inch 800 x 480-pixel resolution. Backing up the S3 will be a 1.5GHz quad core Samsung Exynos processor with 2GB RAM, that will run the Android OS, the 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as opposed to the Android 5.0 Jelly Bean, which is expecting release later on this year. The smartphone will also have 32GB of internal memory, LTE connectivity, NFC and possible 3D support with rumor of a 10 to 12 megapixel camera.
Samsung’s Galaxy series has often surpassed and even pre-empted Apple’s iPhone in features and this can possibly be a reason behind its phenomenal success, selling more than 20 million units, outselling the iPhone in the third quarter of 2011. And the Galaxy S3 will endeavor to cement this lead.
Tech website Boy Genius Report commented, “Samsung’s Galaxy lineup has been one of the most sought after smartphone lines worldwide. There is no question that consumers are interested in the Galaxy.

Fireball in Tasmania sky – was it an UFO or a meteor

Written By Duri News on Monday, March 05, 2012 | 7:31 PM

Duri News - Close on the heels of the news about the sighting of an unusual fireball in the Scottish sky, another similar incident has been reported from Victoria and Tasmania.

The object has been described as a red fireball that moving more or less horizontally and remained visible for nearly 20 seconds.

The timing was also approximately the same – the Scottish sighting was at 9.45 pm, the one in Tasmania was at 10.30 pm.

It is but natural for people to be curious about these unusual phenomenons.

Do these lend credence to the theory of UFOs and about our planet Earth being under continuous surveillance by ETs from other planets?

The time has come for the scientists and UFO-logists to put their heads together and search for convincing explanations and release the tensions of the Earthlings.

No Earthling would like to be faced with a situation as depicted in the 1996 Hollywood blockbuster – ‘Independence Day’ where aliens arrive to take over our planet Earth.

Windows 8 on a Tablet: First Impressions VIDEO

Duri News - After the Windows 8 Consumer Preview was released on Wednesday, it took me a few hours to decide if I wanted to install it on my old HP TouchSmart tm2. I bought that tablet a while before the original iPad was released, and use it daily. After the Windows 8 setup program told me just about everything I had already installed would be compatible, I decided to take the plunge.

It turns out Windows 8 is going to be a lot like Windows Phone 7 — and that’s probably a good thing. You’ve got full screen “Metro” style apps that have no reminants of application chrome or even operating system controls. There are gorgeous live tiles that animate with pictures, social network notifications, messages, emails and weather. Everything is smooth and responsive to the touch.

However, there are some big differences. First of all, I was quite content with the Windows 7 touch interface. You touch the buttons and they activate. That’s pretty simple. But now that I’ve been using Windows 8, I’m much more impressed. The touch UI is designed to be both ergonomic, highly efficient, and clutter-free.

The main controls are right next to the bezel where your thumbs would be if you were holding a tablet. Just swipe your thumb along the left side to flip between open apps. Swipe across it and then back to show a list of thumbnails representing open apps that you can easily tap to open the one you’re looking for. Then swiping on the right side with your thumb opens the “charms” for other types of operating-system interactions.

It’s really quite nice once you learn how to use it, and there’s only one issue: There’s nothing on the screen giving you any kind of indication on how to interact with this new user interface.

Overall, I’m impressed with the speed, usability, and preview apps in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. I’m glad Microsoft went this direction for their new tablet initiative rather than scaling up a mobile operating system like Windows Phone 7. The fact that you can easily jump back into a desktop computer interface to run all of your high-end content-creation programs (even though they may not be designed for touch UIs) is fantastic for mobile productivity.

Have you tried the Windows 8 Consumer Preview yet? Are you looking forward to new Windows 8 tablets becoming available?

Canada: Prehistoric reptile remains found near Lethbridge Alberta

Duri News - Museum technicians are uncovering mosasaur fossils near the city of Lethbridge Alberta. The reptile was almost four meters long, had flippers, and sharp teeth in a large head.

The fossils were found near a mine site by Korite International workers. They are nearly 74 million years old. Paleontologist Donald Henderson said the bones being unearthed represented an almost perfect specimen.

Henderson said:"The detail in the bone is absolutely amazing,""The only thing that works against us was what happened in the past. This thing has clearly been scavenged by a shark. We already found some teeth and the body's been pulled apart quite a bit." This is the second mosasaur found at the same mine site. For more see the full article.

NASA reveals that hackers had taken over agency computers

Written By Duri News on Sunday, March 04, 2012 | 10:46 PM

Duri News - Hackers tend to enjoy an almost mythical reputation that has often been played up in the media, giving most of these Otakus the kind of abilities that would have your head spin. Of course truth can be stranger than fiction and while some may think the reputation is underserved, after all how much damage could a nerd in his parent’s basement do?, the past couple of months have shown that hackers are as capable as the movies would lead you to believe.

The hacktivist collective, Anonymous, has over the past couple of months led a string of high profile hacks that has left the authorities scratching their heads. Whether it was the FBI, the US Department of Justice or the Greek government or even the Motion Picture Association of America Anonymous was able to hack into all of them. And now according to NASA’s inspector general’s office, hackers were able to gain full access into the space agency’s computer network.

Testifying to the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology's Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight about NASA’s cybersecuirty, NASA’s inspector general, Philip K Martin revealed that in 2011 hackers were able to gain access to computers of NASA’s jet propulsion laboratory and also stated that the hackers had “full functional control” of these key NASA computers.

In his statement, Mr Martin revealed that the hackers had “full system access” and had the ability to "modify, copy, or delete sensitive files" and "upload hacking tools to steal user credentials and compromise other NASA systems". Mr Martin believed that the hacking attack had originated from “Chinese-based internet protocol [IP] addresses".

But according to the testimony the above incident was not the only cybersecurity breach. Between 2010 and 2011 the space agency had "5,408 computer security incidents" and between April of 2009 and 2011, the agency “reported the loss or theft of 48 Agency mobile computing devices.” In a particular incident cited, ‘an unencrypted notebook computer’ containing detailed algorithms used to operate the International Space Station was lost. But NASA stated that "at no point in time have operations of the International Space Station been in jeopardy due to a data breach".

Mr Martin said that NASA represented a "target-rich environment for cyber attacks" adding that the hacker’s motivations ranged from "individuals testing their skill to break into NASA systems, to well-organized criminal enterprises hacking for profit, to intrusions that may have been sponsored by foreign intelligence services".

But Mr Martin said that because of NASA’s investigations had resulted in “arrests and convictions of foreign nationals in China, Great Britain, Italy, Nigeria, Portugal, Romania, Turkey, and Estonia".

Mobile Apps that Make It Easier to Communicate with Medical Providers

Duri News - Medical Care Mobile Apps are Becoming More Common.

With hundreds of mobile application downloads available for consumers using smart phones, the biggest questions to ask before downloading them is, which applications are the most useful and do they work?

In the medical care industry, mobile applications that allow consumers to interface with hospitals, medical centers and clinics are on the rise. Currently there are applications available for sharing information such as finding consultants, guidance to a particular hospital, health and first aid references, storing of important personal medical data and alerting emergency hospital personnel ahead of time about health symptoms before arrival to the emergency room.

A mobile application developed by iTriage that has been used for a couple years, allows smart phone users to quickly access a variety of healthcare information about symptoms, diseases, medications, procedures, and nearby facilities.

The iTriage just added a new feature that exclusively works with the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. The medical center became the first hospital located on the Florida panhandle area to offer the use of a smart phone application to allow people to notify the emergency room (ER) staff that they are en route to the hospital.

As of today, when a consumer uses the iTriage application to locate Fort Walton Beach Medical Center or its affiliate Destin Emergency Care Center, the user will have the option to click “iNotify” from the facility’s listing. The patient can thn fill out out specific details like symptoms experienced, allergies, and anything else helpful for the ER staff to know prior to arrival. This allows the ER team to be better prepared for the patient’s care needs before they arrive.

The iTriage application is available as a free download from app stores for iPhone and Android devices, and is accessible from any web-enabled device at www.iTriageHealth.com.

A mobile application (Abubavam Hospital) developed by Anubavam LLC, San Antonio, Tex., allows users to access first aid information in its healthcare mobile app with a press of a key providing important and helpful information for everything from stomach pains, animal bites and headaches..

The app also allows users to check information on hospital facilities, find out tariffs for room, lab and consultation fees, and a virtual tour feature which gives the user turn-by-turn guidance of mapping from their current location. To find out more about Anubavam mobile apps, go to www.Anubavam.com.

Another new mobile app that could help save lives comes through a partnership between the San Jose, (Calif.) Fire Department and the El Camino Hospital, Mountain View, Calif.

The mobile app called “PulsePoint” enables members of the public to provide life-saving assistance to victims of sudden cardiac arrest. San Jose is the nation's largest city to use PulsePoint's location-aware technology.

A real nice feature of this app allows users who have indicated they are trained in CPR can be notified if someone nearby is having a cardiac emergency and may require CPR. The app also uses sophisticated location-based services to alert citizens in a public place of the need for CPR.

The app is available for both the iPhone and Android smart phones. Additional information on the PulsePoint app can found at www.pulsepoint.org

Other mobile applications on the market allow individuals to monitor their calorie intake, allow doctors to view a patient's x-rays and deliver strict weight management programs.

One key note on all the mobile medical applications coming into view on the marketplace. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is striving to seek a balance between patient safety and innovation. The FDA has the key responsibility to monitor the effectiveness of mobile medical applications so they to not pose a risk to a patients health, assuming they do not work properly as intended by the app developers.

Oxygen Detected on a Moon of Saturn

Written By Duri News on Saturday, March 03, 2012 | 11:18 PM

Duri News - Cassini has sniffed molecular oxygen ions in Saturn's icy moon Dione for the first time" , said in a statement a team of NASA.

However, the oxygen ions are widely scattered, one for each 11-cubic centimeters, what makes this concentration equivalent to that of the earth's atmosphere at an altitude of 480 kilometers.

"We now know that Dione, like the rings of Saturn and its moon Rhea, is a source of oxygen molecules," said Robert Tokar, a member of the Cassini mission at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

In his view, this finding confirms that the oxygen is common in the Saturn system of moons and may originate in processes not involving life forms.

Oxygen, a basic element for life on earth where its concentration is the atmosphere, is about 21%, could originate from the moons of Saturn due to solar photons or energetic particles strike the surface of the satellite ice water.

Scientists thought that Dione, due to its small size, could hold an atmosphere, and makes new discovery in this small satellite, an object of study much more interesting.

The Cassini probe, launched in 1997, is a mission involving NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Italian Space Agency which aims to study climate change on Saturn and its moons.

The Many Tablets of Mobile World Congress PICS

Written By Duri News on Friday, March 02, 2012 | 7:12 PM

Duri News - Although most manufacturers were focused on smartphones at this year’s Mobile World Congress – and we’ve seen some amazing ones, such as the HTC One X or the LG Optimus 4X HD – there was no shortage of tablets in Barcelona.

The problem with tablets, of course, is that they all look the same, so some manufacturers tried to ruffle things a little bit. Fujitsu showed a waterproof tablet, for example, while LG introduce an smartphone/tablet hybrid called the Optimus Vu, featuring a 5-inch screen with an unusual 4:3 aspect ratio.

However, this year’s conference – perhaps more than ever – showed that, when it comes to smartphones and tablets, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. With most major manufacturers having access to similar technology, such as Nvidia’s Tegra 3 chip, it’s the software and the apps that make the difference.

There’s another interesting point that I’ve argued during the conversations with the journalists and the developers at the MWC – the simplicity of today’s smartphones and tablets may be a good thing, as it makes manufacturers focus on the details. Having a device that’s just a little lighter than the others, or is slightly better built makes a difference, which ultimately results in very polished, almost perfect smartphones and tablets.

We’ve created a gallery of the tablets we’ve encountered at the Mobile World Congress this year. Now that the iPad 3 is around the corner, we’ll soon find how well these stack up to the current king of the tablet market.

YouTube’s 20 Most-Shared Ads in February VIDEO

Duri News - It’s probably no surprise that the most shared You Tube ads in February are from Super Bowl XLVI. Many of the ads appeared in last month’s post, as well — advertisers are keen on building buzz around their particular ads even before the Super Bowl airs.

Accounting for more than half of the top 20, Super Bowl ad success shows that investing in America’s most watched sporting event can pay dividends in the long run.

Ads like Chevrolet’s “2012″ generated controversy by insinuating that not only are Chevy trucks better than the competition’s — specifically, Ford — but that Ford owners would be doomed when faced with an apocalyptic robot alien war. Maybe that’s okay, though, if all we’re left with is a box of Twinkies.

Other ads were less controversial, but certainly caught the attention of comedians and writers, especially on Saturday Night Live. Clint Eastwood’s “Halftime in America” ad was spoofed by the SNL team and Bill Hader.

We also have to give a shoutout to the Old Spice/Bounce ad, directed by comedians Tim and Eric. It was a great way to incorporate two products into one hilarious, memorable 30-second spot.

Finally, claiming the spot at the top of the heap, stars participated in a music video that touted the greatness and importance of Kim Dotcom’s file locker service. Maybe Mr. Dotcom’s recent release on bail helped spur the uptick in views? This ad was number-two last month, but has moved up to the top slot. Will it hold for another month?

We’ll let you be the judge. Which ads did you share with your friends in February that didn’t make the list?

Thanks to our friends at Unruly for compiling the list.
