The league has cracked down on players hitting each other with the crown of the helmet by fining and suspending the perpetrators. The league has also begun to do more research in the area of concussions so that players will not be permanently damaged after their pro careers are over.
As the NFL continues to pull back layers of problems that have been wrong with the game for decades, they decided to uncover the bounty program. This widespread idea is done throughout the NFL as defenses look to gain an extra edge during the season.
The players would pool their money on a weekly basis. They would then award money to players who gave a clean hit and who obtained a sack or an interception. They called this bounties because it's sort of like hunting down someone after a bounty has been placed on them.
For the past week, the NFL has been targeting the bounty program ran by the New Orleans Saints under former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams over the past three years. The Saints took the bounty program to another level by also rewarding players for knocking an opposing player out of a game and for cart-offs, a situation in which an opposing player was carted off of the field due to an injury such as broken bones.
The problem now is that the NFL needs to hurry up and dole out fines and suspensions quickly because this story is totally out of control. In less than a week, stories about bounty programs have come out from players that used to be coached by Williams from these teams: New Orleans, Tennessee, Buffalo, and Washington.
